February 2010: A winter wonderland at Brackles!

Having survived the snow and the trials of having to travel to Little Chesterton twice a day, on bad snow covered roads, Brackles is getting back to normal in 2010.  With all the rain and the melt from the snow as you can imagine the field is a sea of mud. We are thinking of issuing wellies to the pigs!  However, as the saying goes, they’re all happy in the mud!

Poppy our saddleback gave birth to a litter of 7 healthy piglets out of the blue.  Thank you to all our customers who bought our new range of sausages, they sold out fast.  If you have any feedback for us about our delicious sausages or anything else, please get in touch.  Our details are at the bottom of this page.

March 2010: Spring is finally here

The weather is finally getting better, after wading through very thick mud it does at last seem to be getting dryer, although the pigs haven’t minded and seem very happy rolling and rooting through the mud!  Pinky and Annie, two of our Lop sows, discovered the chicken feeders and finally after several successful break-ins to the chicken enclosures, we seem to have stopped them getting in with some extra fencing. We now have our new Lop boar that arrived on the weekend of the 20th, the children have named him Billy of Brackles, which seems to suit him well. He arrived lovely and clean, but it didn’t last for long, as once in his area he settled in well and was soon rolling in the mud!

April 2010: Brackles is enjoying the good weather.

It’s hard to believe that Lottie and Lola, our pet lambs, are already a year old! As the weather continues to improve the field has finally become dryer under foot. The pigs are enjoying sunbathing and the chickens are taking their daily dust bath! With the summer months ahead, we are planning our barbeque range.  This will include our lovely free range sausages, burgers and of coarse our succulent belly pork slices, which are fantastic cooked on the barbeque. We will have a selection available from our freezer, if you would like to purchase just call at the door or contact us. These should be available within the next month or so, please keep an eye on our sign. Once again thank you to all our customers for supporting us, enjoy the summer.

Summer 2010 update.

Well what a busy, productive summer we have had. So busy we haven’t had time to update our news! We’ve have had 12 litters of piglets and lots of hungry pigs to feed. The chickens are having a bit of a rest, so eggs are fewer at the moment. Thank you to our customers for being patient and waiting for their eggs, the chickens will start to lay more as we move into the winter months. We were really pleased with our BBQ range, thank you to our customers who came to try our fantastic pork and apple burgers and sausages, many returning to buy more! We are really pleased that Richard Cross of Marsh Gibbon has started to make our sausages and burgers for us and to cut up our meat.

The summer was also a busy time for the next phase of Brackles – our homemade cakes and preserves. Lisa’s kitchen has been inspected and got the go ahead, which means many customers are now enjoying homemade cakes made to order and baked with Brackles fresh free range eggs. The Victoria Sandwich seems to be the favourite so far! Homemade jams and marmalade are available to purchase when you come for eggs or pork, cakes can be ordered at the door or by contacting us.

October 2010: Autumn is here!

Doesn’t time fly when you are having fun!  Our new range of cakes is proving very popular with customers.  October sees the launch of our new look website, we hope you like it!  As always we would like to thank each and every customer who has supported us since we started trading in 2008.  Good quality, local produce, is something we feel very passionate about and we need your support to keep the smallholding running!  With everyone watching the pennies, we think you’ll find Brackles pork, eggs, cakes and preserves good value for money.  We look forward to serving you over the winter months; let’s hope it’s not such a harsh winter this year.

“The best leg of pork we have eaten in many years. The marbled meat was very flavoursome, delicate and tender, and the crackling was absolutely exceptional”
